Sonos Play:3 vs Play:5

sonos play 3 reviewThis week Sonos introduced the Play:3, the cheaper-by-$100 version of the Play:5. Listing for $299, this makes starting a Sonos speaker network cheaper than ever before. Just like the Play:5, the Sonos Play:3 serves as a Zone Player and speaker in one. Both models come in black and white, and the only wire needed for either is the power cord (unless it’s the only Sonos piece you own, because the first piece in a Sonos network must be hard-wired to a router). Both allow separate bass and treble adjustments, and two of either model can be set to ‘stereo pair’ mode for same-room play (one service as the left channel and one as the right). So what are the differences between the Play:3 and the Play:5?  There are two:

POWER

First off, power. The Play:5 uses 5 amps, where the Play:3 scales downs to 3 amps. Both come with 2 mid-range drivers, but the Play:5 has two tweeters where the Play:3 has only 1. Also, the Play:5 comes equipped with a powerful dedicated subwoofer, where the Play:3 substitutes a less-powerful bass radiator.

DESIGN

sonos play 3 vs play 5The Sonos Play speakers keep in line with the overall simplistic design of the Sonos brand, and each are finished with the same metallic and graphite grilles. There are differences between the Play:3 and Play:5, however. The Play:5 is bigger all around (8.5” x 14.4” x 4.8” vs the Play:3’s 5.2” x 10.6” x 6.3”). With the more powerful drivers, the Play:5 weighs 9.15 pounds, while the Play:3 weighs 40% less at 5.71 pounds. Shape-wise, the Play:5 is more of a rectangle while the Play:3 is more of a triangle. The Play:5 can only sit on its rubber bottom, but the Play:3 is more flexible. It can sit horizontally or be tipped up vertically to save counter space.

Both models are taking Sonos in a very desirable direction.  It used to cost upwards of $1,000 to get a couple of rooms going with Sonos, but pairing the wireless ZP technology within the speakers themselves have made starting a Sonos network much more reasonable.
